Largest student competition in Brazil, the Youth School Games bring together young people from 12 to 14 years and 15 to 17 years from public and private schools across the country in 14 sports. The competition was created by the Brazil Olympic Committee in 2005 and has the support of the Ministry of Sport and Grupo Globo.

Currently, the event includes more than 2 million young people in municipal and state selective, organized by states and municipalities, representing 40,000 schools in 3,950 cities in Brazil. The national phase, organized by the COB, meets in each age group around 4000 athletes from 26 states plus the Federal District Federation.

The competition has already revealed several athletes for high performance, such as Olympic champion Sarah Menezes and world champions Mayra Aguiar, both of judo. The Brazilian delegation who competed in the 2012 London Olympics, no less than 17 athletes of Team Brazil had passed by the student competition. The event was responsible for the emergence of athletes such as the Olympic finalists Rosângela Santos and Ana Claudia Lemos, athletics, the semifinalist Leonardo de Deus, swimming, in addition to Raulzinho basketball player currently in the NBA.

The Youth Olympic Games Nanjing 2014, Brazil was represented by 97 athletes. Of this total, between the modalities that make up the program of the Games, no less than 72% of the athletes also passed the Youth School Games, including the medalists Layana Colman (judo), Hugo Calderano (table tennis), Matheus Santana, Luiz Altamir, Giovanna Diamante, Natalia de Luccas (swimming) and Duda Lisboa (beach volleyball).
