Aplikasi Telaah al-Qur'an ini bermula lebih tiga puluh tahun lalu, bahkan lima puluh tahun lalu. Ketika itu, di tengah kebangkitan kelompok-kelompok studi di berbagai kampus perguruan tinggi di Indonesia, sejumlah mahasiswa Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) konsisten mengembangkan pembinaan kehidupan Islami di kampus.

Salah seorang di antara mereka, Sakib Machmud, secara istiqamah sejak tahun 1984 sampai sekarang mengisi rubrik Telaah al-Qur’an di Radio KLCBS Bandung pada jalur 100.4 FM. Selama tiga puluh tahun siaran tanpa henti, setiap hari Senin sampai Sabtu bakda Shubuh, alumni ITB 1968 ini telah menamatkan tiga kali putaran Telaah al-Qur’an secara utuh 30 juz.

Siaran Telaah al-Qur'an yang dibawakan santri kelahiran Solo 29 Mei 1943 itu digemari para pendengar KLCBS, radio bergenre jazz. Pemahaman mendalam alumni Pondok Pesantren Mangkuyudan Solo ini terhadap ayat-ayat suci al-Qur'an, didukung pengetahuannya yang kaya di bidang teknik, melahirkan telaah al-Qur'an yang tidak biasa.

Jauh sebelum mengisi siaran radio, Sakib Machmud mengikuti para seniornya, dosen-dosen di perguruan tinggi Bandung, bergerak bersama mewujudkan cita-cita membangun sebuah masjid. Selain menjadi tempat shalat, masjid ini dicita-citakan menjadi pusat pembinaan budaya yang didasarkan pada tauhidullah dengan ciri khas memadukan keimanan dan pembinaan akhlaqul karimah (iman, ihsan, ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi).

Gerakan itu dimotori oleh para tokoh ilmuwan muslim. Di antaranya, Prof. Tubagus Sulaiman MSi, Drs. Ahmad Sadali (alm), Ir. A. Nu'man (alm), Dr. Ir. Imaduddin Abdurachim (alm), dan banyak lagi. Kegiatan mereka di awal dan pertengahan tahun enam puluhan itu ternyata semakin berkembang, bukan hanya dalam jumlah, tapi juga intensitasnya.
