Are you an expat stuck in a country who misses the unique sound of Big Ben? Have you ever been in London within the vicinity of Big Ben and heard that unmistakable chiming? Chime Me Big Ben Free brings those unforgettable sounds to your Android device. One of my customers told be he drives people crazy on the train. People turn turn their heads in confusion looking where the chiming is coming from. In the mean time he is just simply trying not to laugh too loud. :-)

Other customers tell me this app helps them keep track of the time.

By the way, you won’t find any nag screens or adverts in any of my apps. Why? I just think they are just plain annoying. If you like this app, please consider purchasing the full version. In the full version I’m also thinking about adding the ability to also announce the time if you want to hear that as well. (I’m still working on that version). It will have the same features as this free version plus more features such as flexible scheduling when the chimes will be heard. If you contact me, I will let you know when the full version is online.

This app also contains a widget that allows you to mute and unmute the chiming with a single tap.

Here’s how to use and set up the app. If you need help please contact me:

After installing the app, choose to run the app and exit from the app. You can now set up the widget.

Using the widget:
The direction of the Big Ben icon indicates wether or not the chiming is active. Up means it’s active and upside down means it’s muted.

Using the app:
You will also see a Big Ben icon on the main screen of the app. The direction of the icon indicates the same as the widget.

Taping “Exit” will get you out of the app but the app will keep chiming if you have the Big Ben pointing upward.

Taping “Settings” will take you to the settings screen. On that screen you will see some light bulb icons. By default this app will not vibrate your device but you can turn it on by tapping the “Notification Vibrations” light bulb until it’s lit up. The other lights bulb icons work the same way. The other light bulbs are for the quarters when you can hear the chimes. By default all quarters are set to chime. You can tap the bulbs to mute the chiming of a particular quarter.

Also on the setting screen you will see 2 volume sliders. One slider controls the volumes of the initial chimes like the chimes you hear on the quarters. The other one controls the bonging hourly chimes volume. You can also hear how load the chiming is by tapping the old fashioned phonograph icon next to a particular slider.

A new feature on this screen will allow you to set up a period of time you don't want to hear the chimes. Once set, the app will automatically not chime during that period. The full version of this app will allow 5 silent periods to be set. You can even set which days of the week for the silent period to be active.

For example: To set up a silent period starting from 08:00 and end at 05:00 and have the chimes heard only on weekends.

From the settings screen, tap the "Set Silent Times" icon. From the displayed silent periods screen, tap the light bulb to light it. Because the app has error checking build in, the end time will need to be set before the start time. Tap the end time for a time picker. This is a standard time picker. After selecting the period end time, tap OK. The selected time will be displayed. Next tap the start time and pick a start time like you did for the end time. The silent period is now active and set. To make the silent period active from Monday through Friday, tap the calendar icon. The next screen will have lit light bulbs for each day of the week by default. Tap the bulbs for Saturday and Sunday to turn them off. You are all set. The chimes won't be heard on the week days for that period.

Tapping “Main Menu” from the settings screen will take you back to the main screen.

That’s it.

I hope you like this app.
