BSRI is an advanced research institute in the country, where research is on the use of sugarcane, rhythm, dates, golpata and sugar beet, and sugar, molasses and chewing gourds, and bicurious use of sugar. The only reliable economic crop in the north-west and south-western region of low rainfall area is sugarcane. Sugar and molasses making industries are the source of Bangladesh's sweetest dietary base based on sugarcane.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), an adult person needs 13 kg of sugar or 17 kg of molasses in the year. In Bangladesh, this amount is still below 3 kg. Sugar consumption in the per capita is 6 kg, but in the next 2020 (population of 183.3 million) sugar and molasses will need 9.2 million tonnes. At present, about 1.8 lakh hectares of land are cultivated in sugarcane (of which 1 million hectares of sugarcane area and 0.8 million hectares of sugarcane molasses in the area) and from this there is an estimated 73 million tonnes of sugarcane. The average yield of sugarcane is 40.52 tonnes / hectare (46 tonnes / ha in sugarcane area, 36 tonnes / hectare in guang area). According to the requirement, there is a total requirement of 11 million tons of sugar and molasses every year for 11.1 million tons of sugarcane. It is not possible to produce that amount of sugar if the yield of sugar is not increased every year. And that's why we need extensive research.

BSRI is working with its limited manpower and resources to achieve self-sufficiency in the production of sugar and molasses in the country. Basically, two types of work are done from this institute: - (a) Innovations of advanced varieties of sugarcane, sugarcane, goaltrap and Sugarbite and advanced production techniques; and (b) Enhanced cultivation and production techniques invented by spreading among sugarcane growers. Its research wing has been composed of eight research departments, a quarantine or quarantine center and two regional centers. On the other hand technology transfer wing was formed, comprising two major divisions, six sub-stations and three branches. Technology transfer wing generally trains the training of sugarcane and expansion workers, establishes exhibition of new technologies on the land of the farmers, spreads new news through different types of publications, examines the usefulness of the new technologies in farmers' fields, and collects its feed-back information.
