Most aquariums are made of glazed glass panels using silicone glue. However, pure glass is fragile and can only survive briefly after cracking. Although in general, the adhesive will be off first if the aquarium is overloaded. Aquariums can be made with different types of shapes from cubes, hexagonal prisms, until they are adapted to the angular shape of space and the table. A spherical aquarium or round bowl can be made of plastic or glass.

Although glass is more susceptible to cracking and heavier than acrylic glass, but glass is more scratch resistant. This selection is generally based on artistic considerations. Glass also has worse thermal insulation than acrylic, so heat is easier to enter and exit, and glass is harder to form than acrylic. Acrylic has a melting point of 160 degrees Celsius, while glass requires temperatures of about 500 degrees Celsius (glass transition temperature) to be formed. Although higher temperatures are required, abundant availability makes glass cheaper than acrylic. But when building a large aquarium or in large quantities, the price is no longer a consideration but security. Large size glass shipment has a much higher risk than acrylic. And acrylic is more flexible than glass, so the chances of cracking is minimal. Laminate glass is used to combine the benefits of glass and acrylic, ie scratch resistance, bending, and when cracks occur not easily broken.
