Mehndi is derived from the leaves of the 'henna' plant. By applying henna, people can sport body art without any piercing related pain or botheration of the design being permanent.

One can choose from a variety of different designs available for download from the internet. These patterns can be used as a guide, or easier still, and can be transferred directly to carbon paper. For beginners, using pre-fabricated stencils or mehndi designs is also a good option.

After making a selection from the wide array of mehndi designs, the next step is to practice the designs. If one is an amateur, practicing the design on a paper first may be helpful. Mehdi application is all about creativity and practice. After a few designs, innovative patterns will automatically flow in your mind.

There are four main types or mehndi designs to select from. The Indian style includes the feature of fingertips being covered fully in henna. Pakistani patterns are more intricate, complex and time consuming. African designs comprise geometrical figures and dots while the Arabic designs have medium sized motifs or flowers, leaves and vines.

How mehndi works on the skin is a very interesting concept. The crushed leaves of henna when made and applied to oxidation reaction. With the help of this reaction, the dye gets absorbed on the superficial layers of the skin, giving a temporary color. The color of mehndi is pale pale orange, which darkens to reddish brown within 24-72 hours.

The ease and perfection in mehndi application depends on the use of a good mehndi dispenser. These dispensers can be plastic cones, paint brushes or Jacquard bottles. The flow of henna needs to be smooth and not messy. So go on and sport some graceful and royal henna art! This is a truly beautiful art.
