The Botanical Garden of the University of Padua is a Unesco site content and limited in space, is home to many species of plants of the most varied origin, has an intense scientific and educational activities and occupies a prominent place in botany at national and international level. The Botanical Garden of Padua is the oldest university garden in the world that has preserved over the centuries the original location, and despite some changes from the early eighteenth century, although the main features of the system. The System World Heritage Sites Veneto has created several educational tours for the four UNESCO Cultural Sites of Veneto with the aim to raise awareness and disseminate knowledge especially on the outstanding value of the cultural heritage present in the Unesco World Heritage Sites: Botanical Garden of Padua, Venice and its Laguna, City of Vicenza and the Palladian villas in the Veneto, city of Verona.
This guide was specifically created to allow the execution of educational and entertainment activities with schools visiting the Botanical Garden of Padua. The activities, which take place in two distinct portions of the Botanical Garden, consist of a 'treasure hunt' based on the identification of the species, to play with classes of 20-25 children. The 'treasure hunt' takes place in the following stages:
1) The children are given a map of the Botanical Garden in which is indicated the position of 10 woody species with many colored dots. On each of the 10 species was affixed a numbered with the same color on the map.
2) The children are also given a hard copy of the illustrated guide or - when available - a mobile device with the interactive version of the guide (usually one every 3 children, who will be working in a group).
3) Before the start of the hunt you identify a species collectively with the help of a teacher / facilitator, to enable children to understand the functioning of the dichotomous key and / or the mobile device.
4) Starting from the starting whistle, the teams of children have 30 minutes of time to find the plants marked with numbered signs (orienteering) and groped to identify them. As soon as one group thinks they have identified a species, runs from the teacher / facilitator: if the identification is correct, the group can move on to an 'other species, otherwise it has to go back and try to figure out for yourself where you had gone wrong.
5) At the end of the 30 minutes a whistle calls on all groups to the starting point, where he was proclaimed the winning group (the one that has correctly identified more species).
The creation of such a key is not simple, and requires careful choice of plants to include, of the characters to be used for the identification and of the language used in the guide. The plants must all be present in an area where you can keep an eye on the kids, they must have very different characteristics that do not require the observation of characters too 'difficult', shall be easily accessible without causing damage to flower beds. The terminology should be as simple as possible and the text of each dichotomy should be as short as possible (especially for children in the early grades of elementary school, they have just learned to read). The distinctive features should be adequately illlustrati, to make children understand intuitively the meaning of texts.
This version of the guide will be tested starting in the spring of 2013 and will be followed by a new version which will take account of the main difficulties encountered by children in the performance of 'treasure hunts'.
