In the heart of a metropolis, the Castello Sforzesco in Milan materializes the charm of a past that for more than five centuries has been inhabited splendor, intrigue and sublime expressions of art. The walls, now become the window of peace for the citizens, are embellished with a few know-it-a natural treasure, a public credit of which must be taken conscience, especially in relation to the much desired sustainability of metropolitan living here was fulfilled precisely in 'encounter between two stories: that of man and that of nature.
The wall system, designed for defensive purposes, it became home to a vegetation wall represented by numerous and valuable species of wild plants, which persist today provides a 'lung' of biodiversity small, but high-profile: major plants have been able to preserve thanks to the unique characteristics of the product, sharing their story.
A recent study coordinated by the Botanical Section of the Natural History Museum of Milan on the area within the outer walls of the castle and the immediate surroundings (including walls, gardens, flower beds, ditches, alleys, ruins external) has revealed 133 species of more than 50 families, including grasses, shrubs and even trees in a nutshell. If, on the one hand, there are invasive plants and harmful to keep under control, the other will hide small 'jewels' of great conservation value, witnesses of a lost environmental quality and of a lost relationship between man and nature. Among these, Hieracium Southern subsp. Southern endemic species, ie, exclusive of the city of Milan, which was previously thought to be extinct.
In urban areas increasingly degraded, archaeological sites and monuments are small but essential reservoirs of biodiversity and the Castello Sforzesco is one good example, attractive not only for tourists, but also for the Milanese, which can discover here a natural dimension of Milan often forgotten.
The Castle was built as a defensive fortress between 1358 and 1368 by Galeazzo II Visconti. His descendants, Gian Galeazzo and Filippo Maria, transformed the structure in the family residence setting up the park. In 1450, Francesco Sforza began reconstruction of the castle, previously dismantled to restore the walls of the city were built in the entrance tower (designed by Filarete) and round towers. Later, the castle underwent several modifications. After the Unification of Italy (1861) was bought by the city of Milan, who started a phase of restoration and reconstruction directed by Luca Beltrami. Damaged by bombing in 1943 and again restored, the castle is today a square plan and four corner towers and is surrounded by a large moat without water today. It seems incredible that the culmination of a centuries-long history, which was fatal to the survival of many plants have now disappeared in Lombardy, has reserved right in the Sforzesco Castle, in the heart of the city of Milan, the role of conservation of biodiversity as a small but significant and unexpected.
