Le PANDA, acronyme des mots anglais Pregnancy And Newborn Diagnostic Assessement, est un système de télémédecine conçu pour contribuer à la réduction de la mortalité et de la morbidité maternelle et néonatale dans les zones rurales en améliorant la qualité des contrôles prénatals. Grâce à une simple application Androïde avec des icônes, le PANDA accompagne le personnel de santé dans l’exécution de toutes les étapes de la visite prénatale, y inclus l’éducation à la santé. De plus, les données sociogéographiques, les antécédents médicaux et les résultats des tests effectués lors de la visite sont automatiquement enregistrés sur l’application, transmis à l’hôpital de référence et peuvent être utilisés lors des contrôles prénatals suivants, tout ceci dans le but d’assurer un suivi optimal de la femme. Le système PANDA a été développé en Italie avec des fonds de l’Union Européenne (UE) et l’appui technique de l’Organisation Mondiale de la Santé. Ses fonctionnalités et sa faisabilité ont été testées avec succès dans un camp de réfugiés en Italie et à Madagascar à partir de 2015. Enfants du Monde et ses partenaires, dont la Fondation pour le Développement Communautaire au Burkina Faso et l’Institut de Recherche en Sciences de la Santé, accompagnent le Ministère de la Santé dans la mise à l’essai du système PANDA au Burkina Faso où la mortalité maternelle est de 341 décès pour 100'000 naissances vivantes (OMS, 2015). Afin d’atteindre les populations les plus éloignées, le Burkina Faso est en train de mettre en place des projets de télémédecine dont le système PANDA, dont la faisabilité technique sera testée en 2016 dans le district sanitaire de Koupéla, dans la région du Centre-Est du Burkina Faso.
