In this post, I am going to show you how to install What is around? on Windows PC by using Android App Player such as BlueStacks, LDPlayer, Nox, KOPlayer, ...

All you need is an emulator that will emulate an Android device on your Windows PC and then you can install applications and use it - you see you're playing it on Android, but this runs not on a smartphone or tablet, it runs on a PC.

Step By Step Guide To Install What is around? using BlueStacks

  1. Download and Install BlueStacks at: https://www.bluestacks.com. The installation procedure is quite simple. After successful installation, open the Bluestacks emulator. It may take some time to load the Bluestacks app initially. Once it is opened, you should be able to see the Home screen of Bluestacks.
  2. Open the APK/XAPK file: Double-click the APK/XAPK file to launch BlueStacks and install the application. If your APK/XAPK file doesn't automatically open BlueStacks, right-click on it and select Open with... Browse to the BlueStacks. You can also drag-and-drop the APK/XAPK file onto the BlueStacks home screen
  3. Once installed, click "What is around?" icon on the home screen to start using, it'll work like a charm :D

"What is around?" geo-tag and augmented reality application allows you to explore
places around you current location or any map location at your choice all over the world.

To select a map location simply long-touch the map and the application will pin your
choice and start fetching data from the following sources: US Yellow Pages, City Search and Yelp businesses and places, Open Table bars and restaurants, Flickr, Instagram and Panoramio pictures, Twitter, Last.fm events, Foursquare and Wikipedia places, YouTube shared videos.

Touch a dropped data pin to see more details about a place.

Please note that the augmented reality camera mode is available only if your device has a rear camera.

Some tips & tricks

- To calibrate your device compass wave it several times around in a figure 8 pattern as shown below.
- Do not set radius too big for crowded places like big cities - your map and screen will be flooded with markers.
- Camera mode of the augmented reality is available only if your device has a rear camera, GPS location is enabled and the current location obtained with acceptable accuracy ~50m/yd.
- Instagram and Yelp data sources have 5km/3.1mi radius restriction in their API.
