Saturday 9 December, the Indian Juan Diego, recently converted to the Catholic faith, went to the temple to hear Mass. At the foot of a small hill called Tepeyac saw a dazzling white cloud and heard someone calling him by name. He saw a beautiful lady who told him to be "the ever Virgin Mary Mother of God" and asked him to go where Bishop to ask that the place was built a temple. Juan Diego went to the bishop's house Fray Juan de Zumárraga and told him everything that had happened. Bishop appreciatively heard the story of the Indian and asked many questions, but ultimately did not believe him.

Returning to his village he met Juan Diego again with the Virgin Mary and explained what happened. The Virgin asked her out again the next day to speak to the bishop and repeat the message. This time the bishop, after hearing Juan Diego told him to go and tell the lady to give him some sign to prove that it was the Mother of God and that was his will that he built a temple. Returning, Juan Diego found Mary and narrated the facts. The Virgin told him to return the next day to the same place because there would give the signal. The next day Juan Diego could not return to the hill for his uncle Juan Bernardino was very ill. The morning of December 12, Juan Diego hurried away to get a priest because his uncle was dying. To reach the place where he was to meet Mrs. preferred to take another route to avoid it. Mary suddenly came to him and asked him where he was going. Indian ashamed explained what was happening. The Virgin told Juan Diego not to worry, that his uncle did not die and was already healthy.

Then the Indian asked signal that should lead to the bishop. Mary told him to climb to the top of the hill where he found Castillian roses fresh and getting the tilma, few could cut and brought to the bishop.

Once before Bishop Zumarraga Juan Diego unfolded his blanket, roses fell to the ground and the tilma was painted with what is now known as the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Seeing this, the bishop took the holy image to the main church and built a chapel in the place he had pointed out the Indian. Pius X proclaimed as "Patroness of all Latin America," Pio XI of all the "Americas", Pio XII called "Empress of the Americas" and Juan XXIII "The Missionary Celeste New World" and "Mother Americas "
