Ahead of Nyepi Day, the Hindu community undergoes a number of distinctive rituals that essentially constitute self-purification efforts and the surrounding environment. At 2-4 days before Nyepi, the community purifies themselves and the instruments of worship at the temple through the Melasti Ceremony. Meanwhile, one day before Nyepi, performed the Blind Yadnya ritual (Bhuta Yajna). Yadnya blind is a series of ceremonies to dispel the presence of blind kala which is a manifestation of negative elements in human life. In the series of Blind Yadnya, there is a tradition of ogoh-ogoh parade which makes a lively annual festival and a tourist attraction.
Yadnya blind consists of two stages, the ritual mecaru (novelty) and ngrupuk (pengerupukan). Mecaru is a ceremony offerings of various offerings (caru) to the blind. The ceremony is conducted from the level of family, banjar, kecamatan, kabupaten, kota, until the provincial level. Ngrupuk is a ritual around the settlement while making the sounds accompanied by the spreading of rice tawur and spreading incense smoke or torch in a gang. Ngrupuk ritual which is usually done in conjunction with the ogoh-ogoh procession aims to blind the times and all other negative elements away from and do not interfere with human life.
Ogoh-ogoh is a multifarious doll or statue that symbolizes the negative elements, bad traits, and evils that surround human life. The doll was once made of a bamboo frame covered with paper. Over time, most of today's ogoh-ogoh are made with the basic ingredients of Styrofoam as they produce finer three-dimensional shapes. Making ogoh-ogoh this can take place since weeks before Nyepi. The making time of an ogoh-ogoh may vary depending on the size, type of material, the number of human resources employed, and the complexity of the design of the ogoh-ogoh.
