A lovebird is one of nine species of the genus Agapornis (Greek: αγάπη agape 'love'; όρνις ornis 'bird'). They are a social and affectionate small parrot bird. Eight species are native to the African continent ( the African Lovebirds) and the grey-headed lovebird is native to Madagascar Lovebirds. Their name stems from the parrots' strong, monogamous pair bonding and the long periods which paired birds spend sitting together. Lovebirds live in small flocks and eat fruit, vegetables, grasses and seed. Black winged lovebirds also eat insects and figs, and the black collared lovebirds have a special dietary requirement for native figs, making them problematic to keep in captivity.
The lovebird genus comprises nine species of which five are monotypic and four are divided into subspecies. Eight of them are native in the mainland of Africa (African Lovebird). The African Lovebirds are stout bundle of mind-blowing colors with little rounded tails. These Lovebirds are highly social in nature and are characteristically noisy. Noise symbolizes contentment. African Lovebirds are intelligent and they are better off alone or in pairs. These birds do not usually live in colonies because they tend to fight with each other if they do not get enough space for themselves. And the Madagascar lovebird is native to Madagascar. In the wild the different species are separated geographically.
Traditionally, lovebirds are divided into three groups:
- the sexually dimorphic species: Madagascar Lovebird, Abyssinian Lovebird, and red headed lovebird
-the intermediate species: peach faced lovebird
-the white eye ringed species: masked lovebird, Fischer's lovebird, Lilian's lovebird, and black cheeked lovebird
However, this division is not fully supported by phylogenetic studies, as the species of the dimorphic group are not grouped together in a single clade.
Species and subspecies:
- Rosy faced lovebird, Agapornis roseicollis or peach faced lovebird
- Yellow collared lovebird, Agapornis personatus or masked lovebird or Black Masked Lovebird
- Fischer's lovebird, Agapornis fischeri
- Lilian's lovebird, Agapornis lilianae or Nyasa lovebird
- Black cheeked lovebird, Agapornis nigrigenis
- Grey headed lovebird, Agapornis canus or Madagascar lovebird
- Black winged lovebird, Agapornis taranta or Abyssinian lovebird
- Red headed lovebird, Agapornis pullarius or red faced lovebird
- Black collared lovebird, Agapornis swindernianus or Swindern's lovebird
