Pedro Malasartes or Malazarte is a traditional character of Portuguese culture and Brazilian culture.
According Cascudo "Peter Malasartes is traditional figure in folk tales of the Iberian Peninsula, as an example of invincible swindler, cunning, cynical, endless ploys and deception, unscrupulous and remorseless. The earliest mention of the character is the song 9418 of songbook of the Vatican, dating from the century XIII and XIV.
In popular culture [edit | edit source]
Two Brazilian operas has the character of protagonist: Malazartes Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez and Graça Aranha and Pedro Malazarte, Mozart Camargo Guarnieri and Mario de Andrade.
The character came to the cinema in The Peter Malasartes Adventures, 1960, with Mazzaropi in the lead role.
The Brazilian comedian Renato Aragão honored the influence of character on his work in staging Didi Malasartes Renato Aragão Special program in 1998. [3]
The duo hick Zé Tapera & Teodoro, created a cancção called Pedro Malazarte.
Pedro Malasartes was also character of Children and Youth series The Yellow Woodpecker Site, played by comedian Canarinho.
Cia. CIRCUMSTANCES, of Belo Horizonte circus-theater groups - MG, launched in 2013 the show "Suitcase the Arts - A show about Peter Malasartes" which some interpret stories of Pedro Malasartes, directed by Rodrigo Robleño. In the same year this project was awarded the Prize Funarte Myriam Muniz where they were able to tour the north of Brazil.
Roberto Da Matta, in his book Carnivals, rogues and heroes: for a sociology of Brazilian dilemma, devoted a chapter (V), entitled "Peter Malasartes and the paradoxes of trickery," an analysis of their origin, the construction of the myth and its process as a mediator between honesty and revenge.
Trickster, wise and seductive, Peter Malasartes is a famous character in Brazilian folk tales. We arrived in the country in the baggage stories brought by the peoples of the Iberian Peninsula (Portugal and Spain). "Malasartes" comes from the Spanish bags arts (literally "poor art"), meaning "mischief" or, at least, "foibles".
From humble beginnings, the crafty folk hero is full of wiles. You can fool all who cross your path. It always takes the best on the powerful, covetous, proud or conceited. In some tales, Malasartes appears as a humble hero who does justice. In others, it's just a rascal who tries to survive.
One of its known exploits is the story soup stone. Several different versions exist of this story. In one of them, roaming the cities, Malasartes comes to the house of an old miser who did not want to give to the hungry boy. He then preaches a part in miserly lady, announcing that knows how to prepare a very tasty soup, only made with one stone.
In the tales collected by the Brothers Grimm, there are many adventures of humble guys, usually farmers, who can take advantage of any situation. A lazy tailor, for example, can fool a proud princess and ends up marrying the girl. In another story, a wily peasant passes the leg to the devil.
These centenarians rascals continue inspiring characters created in recent decades. In Brazil, example is the backwoodsman John Grilo, who was born in the Auto compassionately (1955), a story written by Ariano Suassuna paraibano turned an interesting miniseries on television. Miserable, Cricket lives in Taperoá, in the backlands of Paraiba, is insubordinate and challenges all those who are in power.
Malasartes, Nasrudin, John Cricket and others are called anti-heroes, full of character flaws (lazy rogues, rascals). They are the protagonists of the stories, but not like those good guys heroes who act properly, lavishing virtues like kindness and loyalty.
