CV Examples – What Should You Include in the Samples?

CV or Curriculum Vitae is of the highest importance when you have to look for new jobs. Unless you get it right, you will end up facing rejection every time you appear with it for an interview. The CV for each candidate is different, but all CV examples or samples are same in the format and the basic structure. Here is a guide that will show you the sections to include while writing a powerful CV that can work in your case.

Name and details

Devote the first section to your name, contact details – such as phone number, email address and physical address such as county and town - and professional title. Do not title the piece as Curriculum Vitae or CV, as that would only waste the space. You can directly open with your name and details to save time on your part as well as for your prospective employer or the HR person or interviewer.

Personal profile

This brief paragraph should be there under your contact details and name, and is meant to offer an overview about you to prospective employers. You can keep the personal statement sweet and brief, and not more than 3 – 4 sentences. This section should include your background, career objectives, what you can offer to the employer etc.

Employment history and experience

Outline information about your prior jobs, work experience and internships. List the entire professional experience in reverse chronological order. While listing the professional information, put in a line summarizing yourself, dates you have worked on, the employer name, job title etc. Put your achievements, skills and primary responsibilities in bullet points. Use powerful figures and verbs for supporting every point.

Qualifications and education

List your education in reverse chronological order, similar to your professional experience. Include your institution name, dates of attending and the grades and qualifications you got in a chronological order. In all CV examples, educational details and qualifications in the form of degrees is important.

Additional sections

You can also add some extra sections to highlight your skills and make your CV better to look at. If you want, you may add the key skills. If you wish to bring the attention of your prospective employer to some of your special abilities and achievements, include it in this section which should be kept under your own personal profile. At most, however, you should detail only 4 – 5 skills. You can also include some interests and hobbies in the CV, but avoid anything that does not add any value or are not relevant to the position that you are applying for.

References

You can round off your CV by adding a reference section at the end. It should contain the names and details of your referees. You may include a line mentioning “references that are accessible on request’. However, if you do not have any more space, it is better that you avoid including this section altogether. You can follow the example of CV examples that do not have any references section.
