Natural Headache Remedies

Many headache specialists have started advocating alternative therapies for migraine patients, who often have to gift filler through debilitating headaches without significantly relief.

“There’s clearly a requirement of better medications to treat migraines, ” said Dr. Roger Cady, director in the Headache Care Center in Springfield, Mo.

Even the most beneficial medication we have doesn’t be employed by one-third of sufferers. And pain medications could cause rebound headaches if taken too often. So some frustrated migraine patients have ventured into natural remedies for help within preventing migraine attacks or minimizing their pain once a frustration hits.

The good news is that your handful of supplements have proven to be effective in a number regarding small studies. Though supplement makers don’t have some money to do large scale research, smaller studies have convinced some specialists—and many patients—that a few of these alt meds are worth an attempt, especially since they come with a low risk of side consequences. Caveat: Always discuss your treatment with a doctor, and don’t take these products without consulting a doctor in case you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Some Natural Headache Remedies

Fever-few and Ginger: Fever-few, an herb with a long history of use for migraines, has been combined together with ginger, a known anti-nausea remedy, in a sub lingual tablet named LipiGesic. A recent study, published by Cady, found that 63 percent regarding migraine sufferers using LipiGesic found some relief when compared with 39 percent of those going for a placebo. Of those taking LipGesic, 32 oercent were pain free at two hours following onset of a migraine, when compared with 16 percent of those upon placebo.

“These are very respectable improvements and certainly worth an attempt, ” Cady said.

Butterbur: Butterbur, another anti-inflammatory herb, has also also been fairly well studied, but for preventing migraine attacks. It’s not really effective for treating an intense migraine once it starts, stated Dr. Frederick Taylor, adjunct professor of neurology with the University of Minnesota. You need to take 75 milligrams twice each day.

Magnesium: When taken daily, magnesium may help reduce the frequency of migraines. The mineral helps to quiet nerves, which tend to get overexcited throughout a migraine. Some studies have found that migraine sufferers are usually deficient in magnesium. You’ll likely need a lot more than the average multi-vitamin contains or about 400 to 600 milligrams each day. Look for amino acid-chelated magnesium (many brand names contain magnesium oxide, which is not absorbed as well). You may also greatly increase your magnesium by eating dark greens, nuts and seeds.
