The salsa is a musical genre that emerged in the early 70's, has its roots in Cuban music and the dance rhythm "Son" but has become so international that nobody associates a country in particular . In the same decade, it became a common cultural identity for Puerto Ricans and other Latin American immigrants.
The roots of the sauce can be traced back to the African ancestors who were sent to the Caribbean by the Spaniards as slaves. It is in Africa that the music is most often played or accompanied by percussion instruments, such as the Conga or tambourine, common in salsa.

The most direct antecedent of the salsa are the Cuban Son, musica romantica, Latin music, Cumbia and Mambo, salsa in line, which are a combination of Spanish and African influences. In addition to the traditional rhythms of Cuban Rumba (Guaguancó-yambú, Guaracha, Bolero and other rhythms of Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Colombia and Venezuela.
Salsa is the commercial term used since the end of the 1960s to define a Hispanic musical genre, resulting from the synthesis of Cuban son and other genres of Caribbean music, with jazz and other American rhythms. The sauce has varieties Puerto Rican, Venezuelan, Dominican, Colombian and other Latin American countries. From this synthesis was born Afro-Cuban jazz and Latin jazz, which has influences from other countries as well. The salsa was developed by musicians of Caribbean origin (Cubans and Puerto Ricans) in the Greater Caribbean and New York City. The sauce includes several styles like hard sauce, romantic sauce and timba.
The sauce has the following characteristics:
Rhythm: It uses as base the key of son, the rhythmic pattern of the Cuban son, that can be 2-3 or 3-2.
Melody: In many cases the melodies used in the salsa correspond to those used traditionally in the son montuno, although it can also be assimilated to other genres of traditional Cuban and Caribbean music, including melodies of Latin American popular music.
Harmony: Corresponds to that used in Western music.
Instrumentation: Uses Cuban percussion instruments popularized since the 1920s as pailas or timbales, bongó, güiro cubano, cowbell, two maracas and conga. Arsenio Rodríguez was presented as the first musician to incorporate the conga or tambó to the dance orchestras.
In addition to percussion, the instrumentation is completed with piano, bass (often electric bass), trumpets, saxophone, trombones, flute and violin. The influence of Afro-Cuban jazz is determined by the arrangement although it is not an essential condition in salsa.
