Rapai is a traditional Acehnese percussion instruments are included in family frame drum, which is played by being hit by hand without using a stick. Rapai often used in traditional ceremonies in Aceh such as marriage ceremonies, circumcision apostles, fairs, accompany the dance, anniversaries, birthdays and so on, and is an integral part of the lives of the Acehnese either philosophical or cultural. Rapai instrumental set the tempo, rhythm, tingkahan, clattering and make the atmosphere more lively and festive. The tool supports the chorus (melody) of Serune Kalee or Buloh merindu (brass berinterval diatonic).

There is a proverb often heard contains "peunajoh timphan, Piasan Rapai" which means the food is typical of the Acehnese are timpan (a type of cake made from rice flour in it contains coconut and palm sugar, or contain Sarikaya / aso-rich eggs, wrapped in banana leaves young and steamed), then Piasan Rapai which is defined as an instrument of entertainment is Rapai.

Based on the manuscript poems sung along Rapai, percussion comes from Sheikh Abdul Kadir Gilani, a great scholar of jurisprudence of Persia who lived in Baghdad from 1077 until the year 1166 AD (470-560 AH). The poem mentions (in Indonesian):
