Scientific knowledge and ability to solve problems scientifically are the basis of development and social progress. We owe to the systematic application of scientific methodology the increasing expansion of understanding the world and its phenomena and predictability. Science contributes to personal emancipation through its inner values, whether logical, semantic, methodological, moral or attitudinal. Scientific thinking is just such from the critical attitude, honesty, generosity, openness and the conviction that the supreme value is the evidence; all compatible with respect for freedom of ideas and opinions.

We are witnessing how, in many sectors of the civilized and developed societies there is a declared war science. This disregard for science today adopts the guise of growing discredit the value of the factual information in favor of mere perception. Even people with high levels of education are victims of prejudice and unscientific attitudes. From the doctor who gives as evidence that a nutritional supplement is effective, "Some of my patients say works for them" to mothers with higher education who refuse vaccinations for their children based on statements without empirical foundation. The movements that seek avoid those biases and present science as an effective system to give true explanations of the world encounter the weakness which is a poor appreciation of its value.

Another challenge has raised the culture of our time is the integration of science with the humanities. A science that ignores the humanities today is as barren as a humanities turning their backs on science.

ASSUMPTIONS arises with the aim of combining science and emotion; as an environment in which the text, image and illustration organically integrate the service of the most genuine of communications, one in which reason and emotion go together.

ASSUMPTIONS wants to be a virtual, interactive, accessible medium at any time and place, to communicate science, small sips but understandable to the non-specialist public way.

ASSUMPTIONS aspires to be a space in which scientific communication is practiced and the meeting between the sciences and humanities propitiate; a space to which they are invited to attend those inside and outside the University of La Laguna do science, but also art, philosophy and sociology; economists, linguists, historians, journalists and writers.

ASSUMPTIONS wants to be a means of disseminating science and promoting its values: the critical attitude, honesty, generosity, open-mindedness and the supreme value of the evidence.

Hypotheses will be a bulwark against the penetration of irrational thinking and pseudoscience and will be a means to help shape informed opinions on issues of general interest.

ASSUMPTIONS is at the service of the University of La Laguna: to make it known as an institution of higher education and as a research center and as an open forum for informed about the challenges of Canarian society discussion space.

ASSUMPTIONS with the University of La Laguna goes one step further in the direction of accountability to the Canary society of the results of its activity as a teacher and researcher and institution in fulfilling its commitment to science and its values.
