The school startup is based on apps developed for the On Track and Two Teachers research projects, charting literacy (recognition and recall), phonological awareness (listening out first sounds and drawing sounds into words), word reading and spelling. Other skills, which are also relevant to students' reading development, such as vocabulary, language comprehension or oral skills, are not mapped with this app. The school start-up stage is intended to be used by teachers, and the survey is carried out individually. The results from the School Startup tab are stored on the device and can be exported as Excel formatted document.

The app is not intended to be used on a Chromebook, so problems may occur when using such devices. The app is also not intended to be used on low-screen or low-resolution phones.

The app was developed by the National Center for Reading Education and Research at the University of Stavanger in collaboration with NettOp.
