The FIFA World Cup, better known in Brazil by former World Cup name and also known in Portugal as the Football World Cup, World Cup and more recently World FIFA Cup is an international football competition held every four years. This competition, created in 1928 in France under the leadership of President Jules Rimet, is open to all associations recognized by FIFA (International Federation of Association Football, in French: Fédération Internationale de Football Association). The old name of the cup refers to Jules Rimet. The first edition took place in 1930 in Uruguay, whose selection was the winner.
Aside from the World Cup 1930, the tournament has always been held in two phases. Organized by the continental confederations, the World Cup qualifiers allow the best teams from each continent to participate in the competition, which takes place in one or more host countries. The current World format is thirty-two national teams for a period of about a month.
Only eight countries were world champions today. The Brazil, the only team to have played in all competitions, is the greatest champion with five titles. It is also the only permanent owner of the Jules Rimet Cup (brought into play in 1930) and won definitively by the country which won for the third time the championship, which took place in the competition in 1970 with Pele, the only player triple world champion in history . The Brazilian team is followed by Italy and Germany, defending champion, with four trophies each. The team that won the first edition, Uruguay won twice as Argentina, another South American country. Finally, France, England and Spain won the World Cup each. Uruguay (1930), Italy (1934), England (1966), Germany (1974), Argentina (1978) and France (1998) managed to win at least one issue at home. While the only countries to gain out of its countries are Brazil in Europe in 1958 and Asia in 2002, Spain in Africa in 2010 and Germany in South America in 2014. The selections with more games in the World Cup are : Germany with 106 matches, Brazil with 104, Italy with 83, Argentina with 77 and Britain with 62.
The World Cup is the most watched sporting event in the world, surpassing even the Olympics. Economically, the competition has positive effects on the growth of certain sectors and the development of the country that hosts. Sports facilities, including stadiums are built or remodeled for the occasion. Roads, airports, hotels and infrastructure in general, are also improved to host the competition. However, a least developed country, the "Third World", may suffer more than expected to organize a World Cup.
The global event is also present in popular culture, in several films and documentaries, and is an opportunity to create songs or hymns. electronic games and sticker albums of footballers, for example, are on sale before the World Cup and generate a great economic opportunity.
