The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (in English, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, abbreviated DSM), edited by the American Psychiatric Association (in English, American Psychiatric Association (APA)), is a classification system for mental disorders that provide clear descriptions of the diagnostic categories, so that clinicians and researchers in the health sciences can diagnose, study and exchange information and treat the various disorders.

The current edition is the fifth edition, known as DSM-5, and was published on May 18, 2013.1 2

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the use of the international system called ICD-10, acronym for the International Classification of Diseases, tenth version, whose use is widespread throughout the world. [Citation needed]

The DSM was developed from empirical data and with a descriptive methodology, with the aim of improving communication between clinicians of various orientations, and clinicians in general with diverse researchers. Therefore, it is not intended to explain the various pathologies, nor to propose lines of pharmacological or psychotherapeutic treatment, nor to ascribe to a specific theory or current within psychology or psychiatry.
