Istilah lama dalam dunia musik nasional Indonesia mengacu pada campuran (crossover) beberapa genre musik kontemporer Indonesia. Nama lama diambil dari bahasa Jawa yang sebenarnya bersifat umum. Musik lama di wilayah Jawa bagian tengah hingga timur khususnya terkait dengan modifikasi alat-alat musik gamelan sehingga dapat dikombinasi dengan instrumen musik barat, atau sebaliknya. Dalam kenyataannya, instrumen-instrumen 'asing' ini 'tunduk' pada pakem musik yang disukai masyarakat setempat: langgam Jawa dan gending.
