Dead Souls - the work of Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol. The author himself called the genre of the work a poem. Initially, Gogol planned to make three volumes. The first volume was published in 1842. Practically finished second volume was destroyed by Gogol himself, but several chapters in drafts were preserved. The third volume of this great work Gogol conceived but did not begin. However, some information remained about him.

The plot of the Dead Souls poem was prompted to Gogol by AS Pushkin in September 1831. Information about this event is in the "Copyright Confession", which was written in 1847. It was published in 1855 after the author's death. This story is confirmed by reliable evidence.

The idea of Dead Souls Pushkin himself learned during his Chisinau reference. Alexander Sergeevich supposedly had the honor, as Colonel Liprandi testified, that in the city of Bendery, since joining Russia, nobody except the military has died. The fact is that at the beginning of the XIX century quite a lot of peasants fled to Bessarabia from the central provinces of the Russian Empire. The police were obliged to identify the fugitives, but often unsuccessfully - they took the names of the deceased. This was basically the poem Dead Souls.

Dead Souls is a work that anyone who loves classical literature should read. Gogol wrote many works, but this poem is considered one of the best in his work.
