Since 400 AD, the Christian Church has been using church bells as a way to announce canonical hours, which are the times throughout the day for prayer. Church bells have a cup-shaped design, with a clapper hanging in the middle to strike the cast metal resonator.

Many Christian churches ring their bells three times per day: at 6:00am, 12:00 noon, and 6:00pm. At these times, followers of the Christian faith are summoned to recite the Lord's prayer. The ringing of the bells is also used to signal the start of mass or a worship service. Additionally, it is English tradition to announce death during a funeral service with a ringing of the church bell, known as a death knell or funeral toll.
