Trying to achieve the truth, lovers trust the high-ranking member of the party O'Brien and the junkman, who proved to be adherents of the existing regime.

It was a bright cold April day, the clock was beating thirteen. Winston Smith, pressing his chin to his chest and shivering from the disgusting wind, quickly slipped into the glass doors of the Victory House, but still a whirlwind of sand and dust managed to break in with him.
At the entrance smelled of boiled cabbage and old rugs. A colored poster was pinned to the wall opposite the entrance, perhaps too large for this place. On it was depicted only a huge face, more than a meter in width, about forty-five years old, with rough, but attractive features and thick black mustaches. Winston headed straight for the stairs. It was not worth the time to call the elevator - even at the best of times it rarely worked, and now electricity, according to the savings program, was generally turned off during the day, as preparations for the Week of Hatred have already begun. Winston was to overcome seven flights of stairs. He walked slowly and rested several times: he was already thirty-nine years old, besides, on his right leg, he had a varicose ulcer. And from the walls of each site, directly opposite the elevator door, a huge face was staring at him.
It was one of those images where the eyes are specially drawn so that their eyes are constantly watching you. "A GREAT BROTHER SEES YOU" - was written on the poster from the bottom. When he entered his apartment, a velvet voice read out a summary of figures that had something to do with smelting pig iron. The voice came from the room of an oblong metal plate mounted in the right wall, resembling a dim mirror. Winston turned the regulator - the voice was hushed, but the words were still distinguishable. This device (it was called "monitor") could be muted, but it can not be turned off at all. Winston went to the window - a small, frail figure, whose thinness was further emphasized by the blue uniform of the Party member; he had very fair hair and a face that was ruddy from nature, the skin of which had become crusty from bad soap, blunt razor blades and the cold of the winter that had just ended.
The world outside, even through the closed window, seemed cold. Downstairs, in the street, the wind whirled dust and scraps of paper, and although the sun was shining brightly in the blue sky, everything looked colorless, except for the posters everywhere. The face with the black mustache was everywhere. One was on the front of the house opposite. "A GREAT BROTHER SEEES YOU," the inscription said, and dark eyes gazed intently into Winston. Below, another poster was struggling in the wind, with a severed angle, then opening and closing the single word: "ANGSOC". A helicopter hovered over the roofs. From time to time he dived and hovered for a moment like a huge blue fly, and then on the curve again soared up. It was looking at the windows of a police patrol. However, patrols did not play a role. The role was played only by the Police of Thought.
Behind Winston, a voice from the monitor still mumbled something about cast iron and the overfulfilment of the Ninth Three Year Plan. The monitor was both a receiver and a transmitter, which caught every sound except a very quiet whisper.
