What remains in our memory from the past? Let's remember our own life: historical events, the history of Russia without the Internet, which do not depend on us, but at times drastically change our lives; dates that are memorable to the whole of mankind or that only we and our loved ones remember, and, finally, people. Some are somewhere high from us, but they decide our destiny, others are always near us, and how many more casual encounters, sometimes fatal or symbolic. By and large, the story consists of stories of individuals who are intertwined in the motley fabric of the history of the city, the people, the state, the world. History consists in the continuous movement and eternal change of events, dates, people. Like the waves of the surf, the events of history, born as sea waves in the unknown thickness of the ocean, go in a continuous sequence - one after another, one after another. They run to the shore where we stand, defenseless and weak before their strength, and we think: "If only it's not the ninth shaft, just not the tsunami wave-killer wave that will sweep us off the coast!" Wars, repressions, reforms, good governance and evil rulers, epidemics, harvest and hungry years, earthquakes, battles, and then again wars, repressions, reforms, boards, epidemics - and continuously, like waves, one after another.
It seems to me that the selection of these three positions - events, dates and people - will help to move away from the dull Russian history adopted in textbooks and manuals. Dates and events, monotonous and at times even boring linear presentation of Russian history. This will give a story about the history of our country from Rurik to Putin that natural diversity that is always present in our life and which will allow us to shift attention from a major, fateful event, phenomenon, process to an interesting, important date, to a historical personality or a group of people. Of course, the perception is individual, and one of the readers may seem to be arbitrary my gradations. However, I proceeded from my many years of research and reflection on the history of our country and from the fact that in the study of history it is sometimes necessary to "run from the telescope to a microscope" - to see the starry sky and an insignificant microbe. I tried to write simply, but not primitively, I tried to cover the most important events and dates, but not to turn the story into a catalog or chronological table. I believe that people are always interested in people, and therefore no period does not dispense with a novel about a particular person. But here again I did not want to create a semblance of a biographical dictionary - they are already published a lot. Under the rubric "People" I tried to show a person at the turn of his life, at the most important moments of history or to assess his role in the grandiose events of his era. And I tried not to forget (as far as the book's space allowed me) about interesting facts, trifles (in which, it is known, the devil lies), whenever possible tried to touch upon controversial issues, rumors and gossip that always follow the events, like a train, dates and people. At the end of the book I put a fairly detailed chronological table that will help the reader to make up for something missed by me, tie the thread of the events that have been ruptured, find some fact, name or history of Russia dates. And then, standing on the shore of the ocean of time, we can sometimes, without looking at the approaching waves, not counting them, raise our eyes and calmly survey, as Pushkin wrote, "the impending sea that is coming", comforted by the thought that we are not the first and we are not the last we stand on this shore ...
