Private detective and consultant, with a remarkable memory for anything that can help solve crimes in general, he has very little knowledge in the areas of knowledge that he considers unnecessary to his work. In his inquiries, narrated in the four novels and the fifty-six stories which form what is called the canon, Holmes is frequently accompanied by Dr. Watson.

A very "typical" character, Sherlock Holmes has become the archetypal "private detective" for generations of popular crime novel writers eclipsing his historical ancestors such as Edgar Allan Poe's Chevalier Auguste Dupin and Émile Gaboriau's Monsieur Lecoq. , characters to whom Arthur Conan Doyle refers in his work.

More than a century after its creation, Sherlock Holmes remains very popular and is the subject of many adaptations, such as, to name only the most recent, Sherlock and Elementary TV series or Guy Ritchie's film Sherlock Holmes.
Sherlock Holmes began his professional activity in 1878, met Dr. Watson in 1881 and confessed to having conducted several investigations in 1891 [ref. necessary]. Holmes and Watson will share the same apartment until his wedding.

It resurfaced three years later (in The Empty House). He tells that during those years (period called the "big hiatus"), he took a false identity, that of a Norwegian explorer, and went to Khartoum, in the same palace where Gordon Pasha was murdered . Holmes justified his disappearance by the fact that his strike against Professor Moriarty left a dangerous member of his band free, Colonel Sebastian Moran7. The latter, executor of the low works of Moriarty, had managed to escape all impeachment during the elimination of the criminal network of the professor. He had followed his mentor to the Reichenbach Falls. After witnessing the death of his leader, caused by Holmes, Moran had tried to kill the detective by causing an avalanche of rocks on him. Holmes, however, managed to escape. Moran swore to kill Holmes, but he dropped Moran into a trap, causing his arrest.

He therefore resumes service from 1894 to 1903 [ref. necessary]. He received the Legion of Honor in 18948, but refused the title of Knight in 1902.

A retreat took place in the countryside in 1907, where Holmes spent his last years studying bees and writing a treatise on beekeeping. He will leave this activity to serve his country on the eve of the first world war by foiling the tricks of a Prussian spy (His last bow stroke), and finally to narrate himself some adventures (like The Mane of the lion), having then practically no contact with Dr. Watson.
