History of Kitab al-Barzanji

During the time of Sultan Salahuddin Yusuf Al-Ayyubi on the first anniversary of the Prophet's birthday, in 1184 (580 H), the Sultan initiated the Maulid activity by holding a contest to write the Prophet's history and praise the Prophet in the most beautiful language. Sastrawan and all scholars at that time were invited to attend the competition. And the results of the competition that became the first winner were Shaykh Ja'far Al-Barzanji.

Unexpectedly, it turned out that the Prophet's birthday commemoration which had been held by Sultan Salahuddin produced positive results that made the spirit of the Muslims in the face of the Crusades revived. Sultan Salahuddin succeeded in gathering the power of war, even though in 1187 (583 H) Jerusalem could be captured by Sultan Salahuddin from the hands of Europeans, and the Aqsa Mosque could become a mosque again, to this day.

Actually the original name of this book is q Iqd al-Jawahir which means the Necklace of Jewel, or also ‘Iqd al-Jawhar fii Mawlid an-Nabawiyyil Azhar. Because the author of this book was born in a place called Barzanj, which is a place in the Kurdistan region, so many people call this book the Book of Mawlid al-Barzanji. And until now this book is famous as the Book of Mawlid al-Barzanji.
