A glimpse of the Abbasids:

Abbasid Caliphate (Arabic: الخلافة العباسية, al-khilāfah al-‘abbāsīyyah) or Abbasid Banu (Arabic: العباسيون, al-‘abbāsīyyūn) is the second Islamic caliphate in power in Baghdad (now the capital of Iraq). This Caliphate developed rapidly and made the Islamic world the center of world knowledge. The Caliphate came to power after taking it from the Umayyads and subjugating all its territories except Andalusia. The Abbasids were referred to the descendants of the youngest Prophet Muhammad's uncle, Abbas ibn Abdul-Muttalib (566-652), therefore they were also included in the Bani Hashim. Ruling began in 750 and moved the capital from Damascus to Baghdad. Developed for three centuries, but slowly faded after the rise of the Turks which previously was part of the army of the caliphate they formed, and was known as the Mamluks. During 150 years of taking power over Iran, the Caliphate was forced to hand over power to local dynasties, often called amirs or sultans. Submitting Andalusia to the descendants of the fleeing Umayyads, Maghreb and Ifriqiya to Aghlabiyyah and Fatimids. The total collapse in 1258 was caused by the Mongol attack led by Hulagu Khan which destroyed Baghdad and left no trace of the knowledge gathered in the Baghdad library.
