New Zealand citizen Margaret van Gildermelsen has transformed her life story with her Jordanian "Bedouin" husband Mohammed Abdullah, whom she met in 1978, to a book titled "I Married a Bedouin" that tells the story of her life.
Gildermelsen works in the ancient city of Petra, where her work is on a wooden table displaying silver accessories sold to tourists. It has become a public place where visitors to the city take pictures of her with her world-wide fame.

The story of Gildermelesen began in 1978 when she came as a tourist to visit Petra with her Australian friend Elizabeth, and then collected a love story with her Jordanian "nomad" Mohammed Abdullah, who lived in a cave.

After her husband's death in 2002, she decided to collect her story in a book that "mentions the authenticity and details of Bedouin life." My marriage to Badawi and my sons Salwa, Rami and Marwan were a great incentive to write my book.

"I lived in Jordan for 38 years and lived with Muhammad until 1985 in a cave, before the Jordanian government moved us to the village of Umm Sihon," she said, adding: "In my book I described how the lives of the Petra Bedouins were before they had water and electricity, .

When asked about the motivation to write for her story, Gildermelesen laughs: "Many years of incentives. Muhammad was a wonderful young man. We got married and we have three children. I lived in a cave and the story had to be written."

"The people here welcomed me, the Jordanians are a good people, the picture may be different from afar, but when you live with them you understand what I'm saying, and it's easy to be friends with them."

"This is an important question. It was certainly unacceptable to them, but it was my life and I had already married, but I visited them many times after my marriage to Muhammad, and my parents came here many times," said Gildermelesin.

"I was lucky when I started publishing my book in London in 2006, printed it 21 times and printed it in 14 languages, and my book was translated into Turkish four years ago," she said.

The Jordanian city of Petra is one of the seven new wonders of the world, chosen in 2007 after a popular vote that lasted for several months, with the participation of about 70 million people from the world.
