கவசம் என்றால் பாதுகாப்பது அல்லது காப்பாற்றுவது என்று பொருள்படும். போரின் போது வீரர்கள் எதிரிகளிடமிருந்து தன்னைக் காத்துக் கொள்ள கவசம் அணிந்து கொள்வார்கள். அவ்வாறு கந்தசஷ்டி கவசம் நம்மை தீமைகளிலிருந்தும், கஷ்டத்திலிருந்தும், நோய்நொடிகளிலிருந்தும் காப்பதால் அதை கவசம் என்று அழைக்கின்றோம்.
இந்த கந்த சஷ்டி கவசத்தை அருளியவர் ஸ்ரீ தேவராய சுவாமிகள்.
தேவராய சுவாமிகள் ஒரு சமயம் கடும் வயிற்றுவலியால் மிகவும்அவதிப்பட்டு வந்தார். எவ்வளவோ சிகிச்சைகள் மேற்கொண்டும் அவருடைய வயிற்றுவலி தீர்ந்தபாடில்லை. வாழ்க்கையே வெறுப்போய் கடலில் விழுந்து தற்கொலை செய்து கொள்ளும் முடிவோடு திருச்செந்தூர் சென்றார்.

அவர் சென்ற நாளில் திருச்செந்தூரில் கந்த சஷ்டி விழா ஆரம்பித்திருந்தது. தீவிர முருக பக்தரான தேவராய சுவாமிகள், சஷ்டி நாட்களில் விரதமிருந்து முருகனை மனம் குளிர வழிபட்டு சூரசம்ஹாரம் கண்ட பின்பு உயிர் விடலாம் என்று முடிவெடுத்தார்.

நல்ல அருட்கவியும், மந்திரநூல் வல்லுனருமான தேவராய சுவாமிகள், சஷ்டி விரத நாட்களான ஆறு தினங்களில், தினத்துக்கு ஒன்றாக, ஆறுபடை வீடுகளக்கும் தனித்தனியாக ஆறு கவசங்களை பாடி முடிப்பது என்று முடிவு செய்தார்.

அவ்வண்ணமே ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் ஒவ்வொரு படை வீட்டிற்குரிய கவசங்களை பாட ஆரம்பித்தார். அவர் பாட ஆரம்பித்ததும் வயிற்றுவலி படிப்படியாக குறைய ஆரம்பித்தது. சஷ்டியின் ஆறாவது நாளன்று வயிற்றுவலி அறவே நீங்கிவிட்டது. இப்படி பிறந்தவை தான் கந்த சஷ்டி கவசங்கள் ஆறும்.

தேவராய சுவாமிகள் ஒவ்வொரு படைவீட்டிற்கும் ஒவ்வொரு கவசமாக ஆறு கவசங்களை இயற்றியுள்ளார். இவை அனைத்துமே 'கந்த சஷ்டி கவசம்' என்ற ஒரே பெயரைத்தான் கொண்டு அழைக்கப்படுகின்றன.

இதனைச் சிந்தை கலங்காது தியானிப்பவர்கள் ஒருநாள் முப்பத்தாறு முறை ஓதி ஜபம் செய்து திருநீறணிய எல்லா நோயும் நீங்கும்; நவக்கிரகங்கள் மகிழ்ந்து நன்மை செய்வர்; என்றும் இன்பமுடன் வாழ்வர் என்று அறுதியிட்டுக் கூறுகிறார் தேவராயர்.
