This energy efficiency and running-cost calculator app has been developed by the Department of Energy with support from Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The app has been designed to assist consumers estimating the running costs of various appliances using the information supplied on the South African Energy Efficiency Label attached to the appliance in-store. The purpose of the South African Energy Efficiency Label is to ensure that consumers are informed about the relative energy efficiency of an appliance before they decide to purchase it.

The app also estimates the CO2 emissions of running various appliances. The app uses an emission factor of 0.9958 tCO2/MWh. This emission factor is derived from the initial research on developing a standardized baseline for a grid emission factor for the South Africa power pool .
