Hedgehog
There are many species and subspecies of Sanhaços. The most popularly known is the Gray Hedgehog, or Papaya Hedgehog.

Species of bloodsuckers
As we said earlier, there are some species of Sanhaços, and they differ when compared to each other. There are the Blue Hedgehog, the Blue-faced Hedgehog, the Basking Hedgehog, the Coconut Hedgehog, the Fire Hedgehog, the Collared Hedgehog, the Amazon Hedgehog, the Brown Hedgehog, the Hedgehog Glaucous and Sanhaço Papa-Laranja, among others that we will cover in this article.

The different species of Sanhaços can be found in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and several other countries in South America. They have a preference for tropical and subtropical regions in the south of the Amazon and in the east of the Andes. Thus, it is more common to observe them in these regions.

But there are also Sanhaços in Central America. This is the case of the yellow-spotted Sanhaço that can be found in El Salvador, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, even reaching North America, more precisely in Mexico. And Coconut Sanhaço can be found throughout Latin America, including in Central American countries.

Physical characteristics
The species of Sanhaço usually have a full body and their size is usually considered small. They have short and strong legs, with the help of fingers on the extremities that facilitate their movement and feeding.
Their beaks are resistant and thick, but have thin tips. Their wings and tails are classified as long.

Of small size it is common to have between 18 cm to 20 cm in length. Their average weight is 42 grams, so the Blood Buns are super light!

Hedgehog Corner
Not all species of Sanhaços have sexual dimorphism, however, some of them have strong sexual dimorphism. In these species, females are usually smaller in size and males and females also differ in the color of their feathers.

Characteristics
There are also Sanhaços with green or greenish feathers such as Sanhaço-de-coconut and Glaucous Sanhaço. Both have a reference to the color green in their name, with the Sanhaço-de-coconut tree also known as Sanhaço-verde and Sanhaço Glaucous has this name, because Glaucous has to do with the bluish-green color.

Behavioral Characteristics
Sanhaços are gregarious birds, live in groups or with the female of their species. They are important seed dispersers, so they contribute a lot to the planting of new trees.

Sanhaços are very active birds that like to make a lot of noise through their corners. The Sanhaço-papa-Laranja emits singing with a series of 4 to 6 double notes.

Reproductive Characteristics
The reproduction of Sanhaços usually happens during spring and summer. The incubation takes about 13 to 15 days.

The female lays about 2 to 3 eggs and the couple shares the care of the chicks. Sanhaços babies are cared for for approximately 20 days and even after they are older they continue to live with the family.

The Sanhaços couple builds a nest during the period of rearing the young. Its nest is built by the two birds, male and female. It is made with roots, mosses, lichens, plant fibers and animal hair. In addition, they take care to hide the nest amid dense vegetation.
