The prototypes of the three heroes of Troy's story in the boat, not counting the dog, are Jerome himself and his two really existing friends with whom he often rode: George Wingrave (who later became the chief manager at Barclays Bank) and Carl Hentchel (who founded the printing business in London and in a book called Harris). Dog Montmorency is a fictional character. ("I took Montmorency from the depths of my own mind," admitted Jerome, but even Montmorency later "materialized" - the dog was said to have been donated to Jerome many years after the publication of the book by Troy in a boat, not counting the dog, in Russia in St. Petersburg, Petersburg).

Initially, it was planned that the book of Troy in a boat, not counting the dog, would be a guide, illuminating the local history as the route followed. At first, Jerome was going to call the book The Story of the Thames. "I was not even going to write a funny book at first," he admitted in his memoirs.
