The story describes a world in which most people lose the ability to live on earth. Everyone now lives in underground isolation in a specific "cell", and all physical and spiritual needs are provided by a universal machine that controls everything. Travel is permitted but people do not like traveling or consider it necessary. Communication takes place through a camera called the "pronunciation device", where people do their only activity: sharing ideas and knowledge.
There are two main characters in the novel, a woman named Vashti and her son Kono, who live on opposite sides of the world. Vashti is satisfied with her life, and like most of the world's population, she spends her time discussing the consuming ideas. Cono is both lustful and rebellious. Trying to convince Vashti hesitant to travel and come to his cell. There he tells her that she no longer believes in this mechanical world.
He also secretly told her that he had visited the earth without permission and that he had seen other humans living outside the world of the machine. But the machine was able to capture it again and threatened to displace it, ie, expulsion from underground and death on the surface of the earth. But Fashti, however, did not believe her son and considered him insane and returned to the part of the world.
Vashti continued her daily routines, but there were two important events in the story. First, the life support device needed to visit the outside world is canceled. Many welcome this development, as they fear who will try it out. Second, religion reappears among people, since the machine has become a place of worship. People forget that humans made the machine, and deal with it as a spiritual entity that precedes their needs. Those who do not accept the machine as God are seen as perverted and threatened with displacement. Later, the machine that repairs the machine begins to decay, but these fears are rejected because of the machine's potential power and power.
During this time, Kono is transferred to a cell near Fashti. He said he thought the machine was collapsing, and vaguely says, "The machine stops." Fashti continues her normal life, but defects begin to appear in the machine. At first, humans accept the degradation of the machine as a whim, of which they are then fully subservient, but the situation continues to deteriorate, knowing how to repair the machine has been lost over time.
In the end, the machine collapses and the sudden destruction comes to an end and civilization ends. Cono comes to the destroyed fascist cell, and knows before their death that the most important in the world is man and his relationship with the natural world, and that the task now rests with the inhabitants of the surface to rebuild the human race and prevent the repetition of machine error
