More than five thousand years ago, Chinese discovered that by applying pressure with our fingers and hands to specific points on the body, we could relieve pain. Through instinct, trial and error, and methodical observation, we identified hundreds of acupressure points that could be used to alleviate physical symptoms, benefit the healthy functioning’ of internal organs, and balance the emotions.
Acupressure stimulates the same points as acupuncture, but instead of needles, it involves pressing specific points on the body with fingers, knuckles and palms to relieve pain, reduce stress and to promote good health.
Before you start learning the self-acupressure healing routines, there are two things you need to know:
1) Title format
The standard international acupuncture nomenclature is used throughout the routines. Each point’s name consists of the name of the channel and the number of the point from the beginning of the channel.e.g. LU 1(lung1), LIV 13(liver 13)
2) CUN measurements
The traditional method of locating the points is uses body inches. Those units are relative to the size of the area being measured and called CUN in Chinese.
1 CUN is approximately the width of the interphalangeal joint of the thumb.
1.5 CUNs is approximately the width of the index and middle finger at the level of the first interphalangeal joint.
2 CUNs is approximately the length of the middle and distal phalanges of index finger
3 CUNs is approximately the width of the four fingers at the level of the first of interphalangeal joint of the index finger
