Malaysian music is a generic term for music made in various genres in Malaysua. Most genres in Malaysian music reflect certain ethnic groups of various racial Malaysians consisting of Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans, Dayaks, Kadazandusuns, Eurasians and other groups.

In general, Malaysian music can be categorized as classical music, phochlor, syncretic (or acculturated music), popular and contemporary art. Classical music and phochlor existed in pre-colonial times and stood in vocal, dance and theatrical music such as Nobat, Mak Yong, Mak Inang, Dikir barat, Ulek mayang and Menora. Syncretic music developed in the post-Portuguese period (16th century) and consists of elements of local and foreign music from theatrical and musical sources of Arabic, Persian, Indian, Chinese and Western. Some genres of the music are Zapin, Ghazal, Dondang Sayang, Mata-kantiga, Joget, Jikey, Boria, Keroncong and Bangsawan. [1]

Both popular music and Malaysian contemporary art in particular are Western-based music combined with several local elements. In the 1950s, musician P. Ramlee assisted in the formation of Malaysian music that combined phochloric songs with rhythms of Western dance and western Asian music. [2]
