Now I can freely admit it: the psychology of influence all my life I have been the one who has been fooled. I have always been a favorite target for street vendors, fundraisers and unsuited dealers. Far from all these people had dishonest motives. For example, representatives of some charity agencies had the best intentions. But it does not matter. Frustratingly, I was often the owner of unnecessary magazine subscriptions or tickets for the health workers' ball. Probably the psychology of influence is free, this my long-term status of a simpleton explains my interest in studying concessions. What factors make one person say “yes” to another? And the use of what techniques allows to achieve such compliance? I wondered why a demand expressed in a certain way is often ignored, while a similar request, formulated in a slightly different way, makes it possible to achieve success.
Therefore, in the role of an experimental social psychologist, I began to study the psychology of pliability. At first, the research took the form of a series of psychology influences and relationships of experiments, conducted mostly in my laboratory with the participation of college students. I wanted to find out what psychological principles underlie compliance with respect to a request or requirement. Recently, psychologists have learned a great deal about these principles - what they are and how they work. I described these principles as levers of influence. In subsequent chapters, I will talk about the most important of them NLP.
After a while, I began to realize that although experimental work was necessary, it was not enough alone. Bare experiments did not allow judging the significance of the principles I studied in the world outside the building of the institute. It became clear that if I was going to understand the psychology of pliability deeper, I needed to expand the scope of research and the book psychology of influence would help me in this. I should take a close look at the “concession professionals” - the people who constantly forced me to yield to them. They know what works and what doesn't; the law of survival of the fittest confirms this. Such people try by all means to make others give way, their success in life depends on it. Those who do not know how to force people to say yes usually fail; those who know are flourishing.
