Zero Violence is a project against violence against women and girls (VFF) in Benin. Implemented by the Center for Action and Education for Development (CAED-ONG), with the financial support of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), this project aims to use digital technology as a means to strengthen the fight against against the phenomenon.
Indeed, the VFF affects more than 69% of the Beninese female population according to a study conducted by the Ministry in charge of the family in 2014. It is to believe that nothing is done in the country to counter the phenomenon. Yet initiatives have been taken. The legal framework has improved considerably in this area, through the adoption of a number of laws relating to, inter alia, female genital mutilation, sexual harassment, sexual and reproductive health, the prevention and repression of VAW. But, the phenomenon does not seem to be regressing.
A small diagnosis of the situation made it possible to highlight a certain number of interesting elements among which we can retain: the low level of information of the populations on the texts of law relating to the VFF (i); the difficulties of geographical coverage of the territory by the State and the Organizations of civil society (ii); lack of training of actors involved in the fight (iii); and the geographical difficulties of victims' access to care facilities combined with the inadequacy between this care and their real needs (iv).
Fortunately, along with this sad fact, the use of ICTs has become widespread in Benin in recent years. At present, households with no tools to access the Internet are becoming fewer and fewer.
Hence the idea of using information and communication technologies to not only remove the geographical and financial barriers of access to information, training and care but also to number of people while minimizing costs.
This is the quintessence of the project to use ICTs in combating violence against women and girls in Benin, which benefits from the financial support of the International Organization of La Francophonie. Through the support provided to this project, the OIF once again demonstrates its desire to promote gender equality and support innovation in the French-speaking world.
As part of this project, a specialized website and mobile application have been created. Similarly, the usual social networks like Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter and Youtube are used. As a whole, these platforms provide an information, training and social mobilization space on violence against women and girls. They also allow survivors of such violence to benefit from free online care. These platforms also provide a forum for exchanging experiences and good practices between victims on the one hand and those involved in the fight on the other.
