The Chemin des Energies application accompanies an "increased pedestrian route" in the hills of Gardanne, making it possible to discover various industrial installations.
For twenty years, the city of Gardanne has reoriented its industrial activity by focusing on the renewable energy sector and energy savings. In order to make this change understood by as many people as possible, it federated around it the main industrials present in the municipality (Alteo alumina, Durance Granulats, Semag, Urbasolar and Uniper), and several local authorities to set up, with La Rotonde / School of Mines of Saint-Etienne and the Tourist Office of Gardanne, the project Chemin des énergies.
Realized in 2018, the Path of Energies has for main objective to reveal a territory marked by a strong industrial history, by highlighting innovating dynamics, privileging the production of energies starting from renewable resources, the recycling and the economies of energy. Along the way, on strategic observation points, signs provide the visitor with keys to read the industrial landscape revealed to him. The application completes and develops this information: details of the installations observed (history of the plant, industrial processes involved ...), elements on the environmental impact of industrial activities, the visitor is invited to situate himself as a citizen and consumer in the industrial cycles that are told to him. In addition, the visit 2.0 of the Chemin des Energies offers the public an "augmented" reading of the facilities present in the landscape, and even to project themselves in the villages of the Mining Basin of Provence concerned by coal mining.
This course is for the general public: access is free for autonomous visits, but with restrictions on access to the forest massifs during the summer, during a fire risk period. Tracking takes place on a track with no particular difficulty that describes a loop around a photovoltaic power plant (50 to 60 minutes walk).
The observation points of the landscape
The site of La Malespine, a laboratory for circular economy: two companies, Durance Granulats and Semag, work in great complementarity and are committed to the systematic revaluation of all the elements and materials they have to deal with.
The "historic factories" of Gardanne: the landscape visible at this stage makes it possible to tell the industrial history of the territory.
The well Yvon Morandat, emblematic witness of the mining patrimony, knows today, under the impulse of the City of Gardanne and the Semag, a spectacular evolution, towards a pole grouping on the same site innovative economic activities, production of energy geothermal and cultural center dedicated to science and technology.
Founded in 1894, the alumina plant currently managed by Alteo produces specialty aluminas and is strongly committed to upgrading and treating bauxite waste.
The thermal power plant, managed by Uniper, is currently upgrading one of its power generation units into a biomass group (wood combustion and plant waste instead of coal).
The fruitful meeting of mining wastelands and photovoltaic panels: the heap of Sauvarians, inconstructible due to the unstable nature of the deposits of coal residues, hosts today a photovoltaic plant of nine hectares, installed and managed by Urbasolar.
The Mining Basin of Provence, an evolving landscape, an unknown story: located south of the Sainte-Victoire mountain, the Mining Basin of Provence has undeniable assets in industrial tourism and viticulture, and re-deploys its activity in the field of microelectronics and innovative entrepreneurship.
