Definition of Anthropology

Anthropology is the science of humans. Anthropology comes from the Greek word άνθρωπος (read: anthropos) which means "man" or "person", and logos which means "discourse" (in the sense of "reasoning", "understanding") or etymologically anthropology means the study of humans. In conducting studies on humans, anthropology puts forward two important concepts, namely: holistic and comparative. Anthropology aims to better understand and appreciate humans as biological entities of homo sapiens and social beings in an interdisciplinary and comprehensive framework. Anthropology also uses cross-cultural studies (cross-cultural English) in emphasizing and explaining the differences between human groups in a material cultural perspective, social behavior, language, and worldview.

With its holistic orientation, anthropology is divided into four interrelated branches of science, namely: biological anthropology, socio-cultural anthropology, archeology, and linguistics.
