Javanese sermon


"Sermons", in language, are "words delivered on the pulpit". The word "khitbah" which is in line with the word "sermon" (in Arabic) means "applying for a woman to marry". "Sermon" comes from Arabic, which is a formed word from the word "mukhathabah" which means "talk". There are also those who say it comes from the word "al-khatbu" which means "big things being discussed", because the Arabs did not preach except in big cases.


Some scholars define "sermons" as "composed words that contain advice and information". However, this definition is too general. The clearer definition is the definition given by Dr. Ahmad Al-Hufi namely, ‘The branch of science or art speaks in the presence of many people with the aim of convincing and influencing them. ' Thus, preaching must be delivered verbally in front of many people and must be assured with strong arguments and influence on the audience, whether it be motivation or warning.

As for the Friday sermon, there are no specific definitions given by the scholars because the intention is clear.

In the book Bada'iush Shana'i, on the presentation of the Friday sermon law, it was stated, "Sermons, in general, are words that include praise to Allah, salawat to the Messenger of Allaah 'alaihi wa sallam, prayers for the Muslims and lessons and warnings for they."

This explanation is a general explanation and not a rigorous definition and meets the requirements of a scientific definition.

The almost appropriate definition for "Friday sermons" is' words delivered to a number of people on an ongoing basis, in the form of advice in Arabic, just before Friday prayers after entering time, accompanied by intentions and loudly spoken, done by standing if able, so as to be achieved the goal.
