Machado de Assis
Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis was born in Rio de Janeiro on June 21, 1839. At the age of ten he lost his mother and did not complete his studies. Helping in the church, he received Latin lessons with Father Silveira Sarmento. At Madame Gallot's bakery she learned French. At the age of 15 he was rehearsing his first poems.

Due to lack of economic conditions the family began working at Paula Brito's bookstore, typography and newspaper. At the age of 16, she published in the newspaper Marmota Fluminense the poem "Ela", thus beginning a long career as a journalist. In 1856 he joined the Official Press as an apprentice typographer. In 1858 he began to write regularly for the Commercial Post. He collaborated for the newspapers, Marmot, The Mirror, where he began in theatrical criticism, The Illustrated Week, among others.

Around 1860, Machado de Assis, at the age of 20, was already attending literary and journalistic circles in Rio de Janeiro. On entering Diário do Rio he became a representative of the newspaper of the Senate. In 1864 he published his first book "Chrysalis", a collection of poems. In 1967, he was appointed Director of the Official Gazette, beginning his career as a civil servant. In 1897 he was elected president of the Brazilian Academy of Letters.

Having dedicated himself to almost all literary genres, he wrote more than 50 works, especially novels and short stories, among them "The Hand and the Glove" (1874), "Helena" (1876), " Cubas "(1881)," The Alienist "(1882)," Quincas Borba "(1891)," Dom Casmurro "(1899) and" Esau and Jacob "(1904). Machado de Assis died in Rio de Janeiro, on September 29, 1908.
