Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935) was one of the most important poets of the Portuguese language and central figure of the Portuguese Modernism. A lyricist and nationalist poet has cultivated a poetry focused on the traditional themes of Portugal and his nostalgic lyricism, which expresses reflections on his "deep self", his restlessness, his loneliness and his boredom. It was several poets at one time, created heteronyms - poets with their own personalities who wrote their poetry.

Fernando Antônio Nogueira Pessoa was born in Lisbon, Portugal, on June 13, 1888. Son of Joaquim de Seabra Pessoa, born in Lisbon, and Maria Magdalena Pinheiro Nogueira Pessoa, native of the Azores. He was orphaned by his father at the age of five. His stepfather was the military commander João Miguel Rosa, who was appointed consul of Portugal in Durban, South Africa. Accompanying the family Fernando went to South Africa, where he received English education. Studied at Nuns College and Durban High School.

In 1902 the family returned to Lisbon. In 1903 Fernando Pessoa returned alone to South Africa and attended the University of Capetown (Cape of Good Hope). He returned to Lisbon in 1905 and enrolled in the Faculty of Letters, where he entered the Philosophy course. In 1907 he left college. Between 1902 and 1908, Fernando Pessoa wrote his poetry and prose only in English, only at the age of 20 he began to write in Portuguese. In 1912 it debuted like literary critic in the magazine "Eagle".

From 1915 he led a group of young people - Mário de Sá-Carneiro, Raul Leal, Luís de Montalvor, Almada-Negreiros and the Brazilian Ronald de Carvalho, who decided to found the magazine "Orpheu", a publication that was ideals of futurist renewal desired by the group, defending freedom of expression, at a time when Portugal was undergoing a profound political and social instability of the first republic. Orpheu magazine was short lived, but while it lasted, Fernando Pessoa published poems that scandalized the conservative society of the time. The poems "Ode Triunfal" and "Opiário", written by his heteronymous "Álvaro de Campos", provoked violent reactions leading the "orfistas" to be pointed out in the streets as "crazy" and "insane"
