Dewa 19 is a music group formed in 1986 in Surabaya, Indonesia. This group has undergone several personnel changes and its last formation before being disbanded in 2011 was Ahmad Dhani (keyboardist), Andra Junaidi (guitar), Once Mekel (vocals), Yuke Sampurna (bass) and Agung Yudha (drums). After dominating the festival stages in the late 1980s, Dewa 19 then moved to Jakarta and released his first album in 1992 under the label Team Records. [1]

This group had gained profits throughout the 1990s and 2000s through a series of rock and pop genre songs. The album they released almost always got a good reception on the market, even their album released in 2000, Bintang Lima, was one of the best-selling albums in Indonesia with sales of almost 2 million copies. [2] [3] [4] In 2005, Hai magazine named Dewa 19 as the richest band in Indonesia with revenues of more than 14 billion a year. [5] In the midst of the success he achieved, this group had stumbled on legal issues several times, including the problem of copyright infringement and feuds with Islamic organizations. [6] [7]

Throughout his career, Dewa 19 has received many awards, both BASF Awards and AMI Awards. [8] They also won the LibForAll Award in the United States for their contribution to peace and religious tolerance efforts. [9] [10] In 2008, Dewa 19 entered the list of "The Immortals: 25 of the Largest Indonesian Artists of All Time" by Rolling Stone magazine. Dewa is recognized as one of the greatest legends or icons in the history of Indonesian popular music.
