In a traveling group, an alchemist tells a story that he reads along. It is a variant of the legend of daffodil. The main character in the story is Santiago, a young man growing up in a poor family. His parents worked hard all his life so that he could attend a school. But Santiago longed to travel around the world, and his father agreed to let him use his fortune to buy a herd of sheep.

As a shepherd, he traveled throughout Andaluisa, southern Spain, for several years, enjoying a carefree and adventurous life. The story begins when Santiago prepares to return to a small town where a year ago he met a pretty girl, a merchant son. Although he had been talking to her for a while, his feelings for her made him think about the life of a shepherd like him, and consider a more stable life.
When he arrived in the city, he decided to go to the gypsy fortune-tellers to decipher a dream he'd had for a long time. He always dreamed that there was a kid playing with his sheep, and then led his hands to the pyramid's legs in Egypt to show him where there was a secret treasure. But Santiago always wakes up just before the child is exactly where the hiding place. The gypsy fortune teller said he had to find the treasure, because if it was a child, it was real.
At first he does not believe in the gypsy's words, but then appears an old man, calling himself Melchizedeck, the king of Salem, advises him that it is his own "Self-destiny". Melchizedeck tells him a great story about a happy seeker. Santiago decided to go to Africa. He sells sheep and goes to Tangier. But in Tangier, he was robbed. Hoping, he decided to walk, to a hill, where he saw a crystal shop. The business is no longer thriving because of a nearby new city. When he went to the store, he cleaned his crystal glasses, in exchange for some food. At that time, two guests bought some crystal glasses. The Arab businessman was happy to hire him. After almost a year, he decided to leave the crystal shop because he had enough money to buy a new herd of sheep, double the amount of sheep he sold before. But he did not buy a sheep. Because he decided to go find his "self-legend" - treasure in the dream.

He joined the caravan to a desert near the pyramids. In the group, he meets a British who has been searching for true alchemists for 20 years. The Briton has a crate of alchemist books that surprised him. You learned a lot along the way.

The crowd moved toward the oasis. When the British tried to watch the desert and learn the language of the desert, Santiago read his books and learned about alchemy. The British told him that the purpose of the alchemists was to purify the metal by firing for many years.
When they arrive at the oasis, the caravans are greeted, and are advised to stop because there is war among the tribes ahead. He helped the British find an alchemist. And there, he meets Fatima, and falls in love with her at first sight. Fatima is a desert woman, and understands that Santiago has to find her "self-legend". At the same time the alchemist in the oasis realized that he had met a student who could learn alchemy from him. Obviously that is Santiago.
