 Thaharah is legally obligatory based on Al-Kitab and As-Sunnah. Allah Subhanahu Wata'ala Berfirman,

"O ye who believe, if you are going to pray, then wash your face and your hands up to your elbows, and sweep your head and (wash) your feet with both ankles, and if you are joking, take a bath, and if you are sick or deep travel or return from the toilet or touch the woman, then you do not get water, then mix with good soil (clean); brush your face and your hand with the land. Allah does not want to trouble you, but He wants to cleanse you and perfect His blessings for you, so that you will be grateful. "(Surat al-Maidah: 6).

"And, your clothes clean" (Qur'an, Al-Muddatsir: 4).

"They ask you about menstruation. Say: "Menstruation is a filth". Therefore you should distance yourself from women during menstruation; and do not approach them before they are holy. When they are holy, mix them in the place that God has commanded you. Indeed, Allah likes those who repent and like those who purify themselves. "(Surat al-Baqarah: 222)

And the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said,

"From Ali radhiyallahu 'anhu, he said," Rasulullah sallallahu' alaihi wa sallam said, "The key to prayer is to purify, and that which forbids it (all acts which may be outside prayer) is takbiratul (takbiratul ihram), while those that justify it (return) is greetings. "(Narrated by Abu Dawud No. 61).

"Sa'id bin Manshur, Qutaibah bin Sa'id, and Abu Kamil Al-Jahdari have told us - this lafazh belongs to Sa'id - they say: Abu 'Awanah told us, from Simak bin Harb, from Mush 'ab bin Sa'd, he said:' Abdullah bin 'Umar came to see Ibn' Amir who was sick. Ibn ‘Amir said: Don't you pray to Allah for me, O Ibn‘ Umar? Ibn ‘Umar said: Indeed I have heard the Prophet sallallaahu‘ alaihi wa sallam said, "Prayers are not accepted without purification. And Sadaqah is not received from Ghulul (betrayal). "You were at that time in Basrah." (Narrated by Muslim No. 224)

"Ishaq bin Manshur told us: Habban bin Hilal told us: Aban told us: Yahya told us: That Zaid told him: That Abu Sallam told him, from Abu Malik Al-Asy'ari. He said: The Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam said, "Purification is half of the faith, alhamdulillah fulfilling the scales, subhanallah and alhamdulillah filling between the ceiling and earth, prayer is light, almsgiving is proof, patience is light, and the Qur'an is proof for you or blasphemy against you. Every human being comes out in the morning, then someone sells him and frees him or destroys him. ”(Narrated by Muslim No. 223)

 Explanation of Thaharah

Thaharah is divided into 2 types: Bathiniyah and Lahiriyah

The spiritual Thaharah is to purify the soul of the effects of sin and immorality with sincere repentance from every sin and immorality, also purify the heart of the taints of shirk, doubt, envy, cheating, arrogance, pride, riya ', and sum' ah, that is with sincerity, confidence, love goodness, gentleness, honesty, humble and expect Allah's Face Subhanahu Wata'ala with all intentions and good deeds.

Lahiriyah Thaharah is purification from filth and hadats, purification from filth is to eliminate various unclean things with holy water from the clothes and bodies of those who pray, and places of prayer. Washing from hadats is by way of: Ablution, Mandi and Tayamum.
