塔罗牌 = TAROT

Deck of cards consisting of 78 cards and consists of two blocks, one with numbered cards and the other with cards with symbolic figures.

The tarot is a deck of cards often used as a means of consulting and interpreting facts (present, past or future), dreams, 1 perceptions or emotional states that is also a type of cartomancy. Its origins date back to at least the fourteenth century. The technique is based on the selection of cards from a special deck, which are then interpreted by a reader, according to the order or arrangement in which they have been selected or distributed.

Major arcana
The cards of the major arcana, 22 in total, are:

The magician
The Priestess
The Empress
The emperor
The Hierophant
The Lover
The car
Justice
The hermit
Wheel of fortune
The force
The Hung
Death
Temperance
The devil
Tower
The star
Moon
Sun
The Judgment
The world
Crazy
The latter is the only card that, depending on the type of card or its edition, may not be numbered or correspond to the number zero. Likewise, the 22 Major Arcana are known as triumphs (atouts, in French, atutti in Italian), which means "above all".

Minor arcane
The minor arcana are a set of 56 cards divided into 4 suits of 14 cards: swords, cups, clubs and gold, as in the Spanish deck, but the oldest model: cards numbered from one to ten, plus the characters of the court : "jack", "horse" (or "knight"), "queen" and "king"; what are believed to be the four social levels during the medieval times [citation needed]: the nobility, symbolized by the swords; the peasants, for the coarse ones; the clergy, by the cups, and the merchants, by the golds.

The design of the cards is diverse, although there are classic designs such as the Tarot de Marseille (late seventeenth century), which has served as a guide in the development of the figures and their symbolism. A very popular deck and currently the most recognized is the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot, (or Rider-Waite or simply Rider), designed in 1910 by Arthur Edward Waite, prepared by his disciple Pamela Colman Smith and printed by the Rider Company. Another common deck is the Book of Thoth Tarot, devised between 1938 and 1942 by the English magician Aleister Crowley and performed by his disciple Frieda Harris; this deck was published in 1944, in black and white, along with The Book of Thoth, which explains the symbology and use, but was edited with its original colors only until 1977, in New York, by US Games Systems and Samuel Weiser.

Origins of the tarot

Filippo María Visconti
The first references to the tarot appear in the fifteenth century in Italy. The oldest deck is the tarot of the Duke of Milan, Filippo Maria Visconti (1412-1447), nowadays in the Yale University Library.2 It is currently known as the Visconti-Sforza deck, possibly to celebrate the marriage of its daughter Bianca Maria with her successor the future Duke Francisco I Sforza.3

According to Italian historian Giordano Berti, some images of Filippo María Visconti's tarot are the same as those of another deck designed by the Duke in 1415: the game Los XVI Héroes.

In studies carried out by occultists of the 18th and 19th centuries, such as Antoine Court de Gebelin, Eliphas Levi and Doctor Gérard Encausse (Papus), an attempt is made to demonstrate the connection between the tarot and the Kabbalah, as well as with Egyptian symbolism.4

According to the researchers Daniel Rodes and Encarna Sánchez, the origin of the tarot should be sought between the medieval Cathars and the Occitan culture, whose philosophy fits perfectly into the basic idea of the tarot game.5
