After 12 years, Andrés Manuel López Obrador is finally president of Mexico. The new president made a protest in the Chamber of Deputies on Saturday, December 1, in the morning and before a group of indigenous representatives in the afternoon. In both events he gave two long speeches and began, formally, a presidential term that will end in 2024.

Undoubtedly, what happened on December 1 was historic for the country. First of all, because it is the first time that a candidate and a party that identifies themselves as left-wing come to the presidency. Second, because they did it with a large majority at the polls. In third, by the change of symbols that was given from that day and that will be sought to continue during the next six years. And fourth, on top of the expectations that the new government brings with it and that it will have to manage.

On these points it is worth focusing on the last two, in particular to understand what kind of presidency can be the one that starts and what to expect from it.

We will see in the coming weeks what will be the election of Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Hopefully it is, unlike its predecessor, that privileges work over the reflector. And I hope that the change that he promised for Mexico does not end as it did with Vicente Fox 12 years ago, whose words were no more than the empty cries of a circus host.
